Tip for a Healthy Pet

Now that summer has arrived, many of our pooches are getting less exercise. This means we need to watch their diet and even cut back to maintain a healthy weight. If you need to cut back on kibble, or whatever diet you are feeding, feel free to add some green veggies to fool Fido into thinking he is getting more food! We also need to watch when we feed them. You don’t want to feed right after a walk. Let them cool down a bit so their tummies can settle and absorb some much needed water. Summer is also a great time to make frozen treats. Doggies love frozen yogurt. You can buy plain yogurt (make sure there is no added sugar, or artificial sugar) and freeze in ice cube containers. They make a great frosty treat while providing excellent health benefits for Fido! Also, add a few ice cubes to their water. Ice cubes are a cool treat and even fun to play with!

Hide and Seek

Playing an indoor game with Fido not only provides exercise, but it also works his brain! Our favorite game is hide and seek.  This game takes two people. Each person takes treats or kibble (make sure you subtract this from their daily food) and takes turns hiding in different parts of the house (e.g. one upstairs and another downstairs). Call Fido and when he finds you, treat, and then the other person calls him. I guarantee you Fido will be grinning from ear to ear and will be exhausted after 10 minutes of this game!

Sum-Sum-Summertime Heat

It’s official: Arizona summer has arrived. It is already too hot to walk our pooches much past 8 am. This means getting up at the crack of dawn to make sure Fido gets his much needed exercise. Yes, it’s tough when that alarm goes off at 5am, but remember, it’s for Fido’s well being and it doesn’t hurt us either. So don’t give up on walking Fido just because it’s hot out...just get up early! That being said, considering it is already 90 degrees in the mornings of July, keep the walks shorter than winter walks and make sure you carry water with you if you are walking longer than 30 minutes. Remember too that the sidewalks and road are very hot this time of year, so always check with your hand. If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for poor Fido’s paws. A good idea for summer is to use Musher’s Wax (available on Amazon) to protect their paw pads. Also, please remember to NEVER leave your pet in a locked vehicle! The temperature rises very quickly! And always keep Fido’s water bowl full of fresh, cold water. These simple tips will get us through the brutal Arizona summer safely!
